Intel stops the production of some Core 2

Xbox will Limit Avatar Use

Microsoft has provided a few more details on its new Xbox Live Avatar system, including how developers will be able to use them in-game, and how many avatars each Xbox 360 owner will be able to have on their consoles.

Avatars will be made available only for in-game play on ESRB E10+ titles, said Xbox Live GM Eric Kilgore. And, unlike Nintendo's Mii system, the Microsoft avatars will be one per system, at least for now.

Major Sites Fall Victim to Web Hijack

Security company Finjan today reported it has found more than 1,000 sites infected by an attack toolkit called "Asprox," which exploits discovered flaws in a vulnerable site's programming to add hidden attack code. The attack code in turn searches for flaws on a browser's PC, and if any such holes are found it will download malware onto the computer.

I wasn't struck by the number - these days, 1,000 sites unfortunately isn't that many - so much as by the list of sites that Finjan says were hacked. My own city's site, which I've visited many times to pay parking tickets and the like, was nailed (though it's now clean). Snapple took a hit, as did the National Health Service in the UK and a wide range of other sites.

Firewall Vendors Scramble to Fix DNS Problem

Nearly a month after a critical flaw in the Internet's Domain Name System was first reported, vendors of some of the most widely used firewall software are scrambling to fix a problem that can essentially undo part of the patches that address this bug.

The DNS flaw affects server software made by many vendors, including Microsoft, Cisco Systems, and the Internet Systems Consortium.

Some firewall software undoes a source port randomization feature that was introduced in the DNS patches. While this change doesn't completely negate the DNS patch, it could make it easier for attackers to pull off a cache-poisoning attack against the DNS server, security experts say.

This could lead to virtually undetectable phishing attacks against users of those DNS servers.

Samsung Q2 Results Higher on LCD, Cell Phone Sales

Healthy sales of LCD (liquid crystal display) panels and a profitable cellular handset business helped Samsung Electronics post strong net profit growth in the second quarter.

The company on Friday reported net profit during the quarter was 2.1 trillion won (US$2.1 billion), up 51 percent on the same period last year, as revenue climbed 24 percent to 18.1 trillion won.

But the results could have been better and were impacted by falling demand for IT and the general slowdown in the global economy, said Chu Woosik, head of Samsung's investor relations department, in a telephone conference call. He also said Samsung's costs were hit by higher prices for both oil and raw materials.
